Emerging trends on technology specific to Edge Computing drives me to share this write-up with SCANBA members.

Yes, Edge Computing is an emerging technology specific to infrastructure stream and will be soon favorite choice for use cases in specific industry/sectors.

Underlying elements drives as Pros and Cons to “Edge Computing” in detail.

IoT, Smart Home, Automated living environment, Automated office are the best projects where edge computing practices will compliment the project success in a more effective manner. These are the possible Use Cases driven by singe-underlying determinant would be real-time communication between humans, human-non-human, two smart devices purely rely on the data generated and received. Real meaning of real-time translates into zero latency (i.e. lag time to receive the data by receiver) which is not possible in current technologies (i.e. non-edge computing networking practices). This need of zero latency (virtually no lag time) strongly play a role to determine your business preference on edge over other technologies.

In technical parlance, edge computing works near the network / data infrastructure arrangements and practices near to data generated zones. In this approach, data generated zone will be physically aligned to network storage eco system to reduce the bandwidth on transmission of data by consumers. (be it humans / smart devices). For ex, automated cars, where the car in self-driving mode would require seamless communication to drive safely based on the inputs / output generated through instructions and responses is a best choice for edge computing.

Regulatory Compliance like cross-border data transfer will pose a strong threat to “Edge Computing” in certain industry/fields.

For ex. Banking / Financial services is one industry where most of countries are currently implemented the data governance practice around the cross-border sharing between any countries. For ex. GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) restricts to share their EU customer data (preferable EU citizens) to share either within Euro regions and outside Euro regions. Countries like China and Hk strongly prevents the sharing of their citizen data outside their border.  Because certain industries felt that their business data are more sensitive by default, and in addition regulatory restrictions pose a further challenges. Thus, current practices on data infrastructure are aligned to support this regulatory environment in few industries, where edge is not a natural choice due to various factors. Still, there are few line of business where zero latency related transactions are preferred by stakeholders (like trading domain etc.,) like near-real-time.

In this context, it is quite interesting to see the growth of edge computing, acceptance of regulatory practices due to edge computing and associated business industries / use cases. As a customer, we are in a position to do careful mapping after a clear understanding around these components over the available choices. Concurrently, there are best use cases compliment edge to generate positive benefits and against-use cases which are potential to impact the business due to heavy regulatory penalties for incorrect selection/deployment of technologies.
